Ashy’s Bedroom Makeover: Before and a Game Plan

By Mandi 09/08/2014

You guys!! I am super excited about the latest room makeover that is cooking! It is for my 16 year old sister in law Ashy. Ashy is such a fun and awesome girl. Ashy is probably the most carefree person that I know. This girl is fearless. She is also very (very) opinionated about the room design. There have been a lot of ideas tossed around and I am happy to announce that we have finally found just what she is looking for. The style that we are going for we’ve coined Desert Nomad. It is going to feel really laid back and comfortable, super collected,  erring on the masculine side, and have a little bit of 70’s retro.

Ashy Room Before-4

The space that we are working in is pretty fantastic. It is a really big room,  with a big window and lots of closet space.

Ashy Room Before-3

The furniture that was in there previously (the white buffet and the tufted headboard) doesn’t reflect her style at all. In fact, you know that a teenager is excited to get rid of something when they willingly help you move it out. Here is the thing, if you don’t love something, you can always sell it and use something different. Just because that white piece is probably someone’s dream piece of furniture, doesn’t mean that Ashy has to like it, or that we need to keep it in her room. Remember, it’s your house and you can do what you want!

The colors that we are using are going to be a really good mix of rich tones and beigey neutrals.

The biggest design dilemma is that we need a lot of comfy seating. Ashy has friends over all the time, and so we really need it to be a functional space for the way she uses it.

Ashy Room Before-2

I have some massively fun projects in store that might give you some elementary school flashbacks (in a good way!)  and the entire room is being reconfigured.

Here are a few of the inspiration ideas that we have for the room:

Remember this type of string art from Elementary School? Picture this on a much grander scale…

Did you know that Nate has a new fabric line out in Joann’s? Life.Changing. I bought the entire roll of this gorgeous diamond print.

This retro painting by Kenneth Noland is a major source of our color inspo and overall vibe.

I cant wait to show you the first project that we tackled…it has something to do with that fab window seat.

I have been having a really great time blogging The Nugget in real time, so I think I am going to try my hand at that this makeover too. Inquiring minds want to know,  would you rather see it real time or the big reveal first with the projects after?

  1. I prefer a grand reveal first, then a budget breakdown and DIY projects after. You could easily share the smaller DIY projects prior to the grand reveal. But, hold out for the large projects (furniture, built-ins, etc) for after the reveal.

  2. Real time, because, well…it’s reality! When you see the projects come to life over a period of time, it builds excitement and is encouraging to know that it just didn’t *poof* appear! You realize it IS do-able with a bit of time and effort. 🙂

  3. I have really enjoyed the real time updates on the Nugget. It makes me look forward to seeing what you have done next, and I anticipate the finale all the more. Having grown up in the desert – Las Vegas – in the 70’s – I was 15 in 1974, WOW, that really makes me feel old! anyway, I cannot wait to see what you do with Ashy’s room.

  4. Excited to see the afters in real time. I would LOVE to see you make over a boys room. I love seeing all the cute girl stuff you’ve done but I’m in need of Vintage Revivals inspiration for my son’s room! I’ll even volunteer his room for you to make over! Thanks for all your creativity.

  5. Real time…..love seeing how you approach projects and then how they really come out! 🙂 Can’t wait

  6. Real time!
Very excited about this room makeover, I can’t quite picture desert nomad but looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

  7. I would love to see the project real time! It would be great to know how long it actually takes you to do a room makeover. So often in decorating or renovation shows it seems like it’s something that can be tackled in a weekend, even though we know deep down that;s not true. So if you were to blog about it real time it would give me a sense of how long it actually takes you, and that would be awesome!

  8. I’m digging the real time thing. I feel like we see your excitement and process more this way and it makes it more real and less…this just happened.

  9. I love the real time. I come to your website more often in anticipation of a new post/update on these projects. Plus seeing the mess is so real and actually encouraging to me! Love all your hard work! xx

  10. Ooh I’ve got room envy already – cannot wait to see how it all comes together! I’d love to wait in suspense then see it revealed all at once XO, D

  11. I like seeing posts both ways so I think a mixture is nice. When we first get the reveal we are seeing the big picture and can place every project. When you blog in real time we get to think along and be curious all the time 😉

  12. Real time is the best. Hands down!! Because the room reveals mean so much more when I have seen what you’ve put into it! And let’s be real, when the tutorials come after the reveal. A lot gets left out. Still waiting on that ombré cube wall….
And it is probably easeier to write a post on something you’re working on right then instead of one you did a month ago. 🙂
My vote- real time 🙂 but of course, it’s your blog! Do it how you like best

  13. Real time please! Live lots of updates with a full reveal at the very end! Can’t wait to see everything!

  14. Real time please! I love seeing where bloggers are on their projects and it gives me an idea of how long they work on a project. It also lets the readers absorb all of the projects slowly. When bloggers do big reveals, I often feel like I’m missing out on something in the room because there is so much stuff.

  15. Oh, I’m happy you are doing another string art, you’re last one was awesome! P.S. your in-laws are so lucky to have you!!

  16. Love that Nate Berkus fabric. This could actually be the answer for curtains in my daughter’s nursery. It’s so hard to get a feel for the scale of the pattern though. Does it look large and super graphic or is the pattern smaller than it looks in the sample here? It’s so new that I can’t find any photos online of the fabric used in any projects.

    1. Hey Natasha!
The project that we are using it for will hopefully be on the blog by the end of next week! It is pretty large scale, but super busy so I would say both?

  17. I love it when it’s a big reveal and the the projects after, but its also really cool to see it all come together.

  18. Real time foooooooooor sure! I am the least patient person you will meet so I like to see the process. I think we have seen more of the details/process/struggles/successes with Nugget than with other projects. Which.I.LOVE.

  19. I hate to say it but the real time just kills me not being able to see the finale right away, I’m sooo impatient. I’m a fan of big reveal first!!! That NB fabric is amazeballs and so are the colors of that painting, loooooove!!! Dying dying to see this room!

  20. Oooh – I’m also doing a Mid-Century/Desert Nomad theme in my bedroom – with similar colors and the same Nate B. fabric! Can’t wait to see it.

  21. Real time! Seeing the big reveal first is the same as seeing the end of a movie first or reading the end of a book first… It can kinda take away from the story, the action, and the excitement of the whole thing!

  22. Secret answer: C! Real time but with a master plan / mood board / floor plan layout up first then all the step by step + changes to the plan and what happened in the RL then the big reveal. Is that too fantastical land?

  23. Omg this room is gonna be awesome! Please tell me youre doing a huge string art wall installation piece!? Cuz im telling you now, if you dont I will. Itll be perfect for my daughters room. I love seeing real time progressive makeovers. I really like seeing the thought process that goes into design decisions. Plus I like seeing a space evolve:)

  24. Yay for real time! FYI the nate berkus diamond fabric is on sale at joanns for $12 ! I love that they’re reasonably priced and the with the 40% off(without the coupon) makes me squeal with joy!

  25. Oh, I love everything about this room! And that couch! I’ve been searching high and low for a couch like that. Beautiful.
