It’s my favorite post of the year! Friends, today is the Sherwin-Williams 2023 Color of the Year announcement! Meet Redend Point SW 9081.

Redend Point is like capturing the soul of Southern Utah in a paint color. When I found out what the color was, I was like, this is familiar! It’s so similar to the natural color of the adobe in the Merc!

It’s a warm blush beige that feels like it’s been baked by the sun. Depending on the lighting, it will pull more brown or pink. It actually photographs a little more beige than it looks in real life.

This room was Dylan’s Small World bedroom, but with Ivie moving out and Dyl moving into her space (and not being a child anymore) we decided to turn this room into a guest room. We took down all of the Small World wall treatment, patched the holes and added simple box molding. It’s the same wall treatment that we did in my old office.

My favorite way to use a color like this is all over. Ceiling, walls, molding, baseboards, all of it. It’s such a classic way to make a statement and really celebrate the color! Elevating the design with molding makes it feel intentional and traditional as opposed to basic. I love the way the room turned out!

I will say that I had a little bit of a hard time finding a color to pair it with. Sherwin-Williams has some great pairing suggestions here. Mandi White, Tricorn Black SW 6258 (which I used on the doors), and natural linens are all easy answers, but I LOVE color and wanted something else. I found this great rust colored velvet chair on clearance for $130 and it was perfect!! It complements the red undertones of Redend Point in such a great way.

Redend Point is a color that can appear more beige or more blush depending on the light, so before you fully commit to the color, I highly recommend getting a sample. Thankfully, Redend Point is one of the colors that Sherwin-Williams offers in peel & stick samples! No mess, no dry time, no sample pots of paint, just peel it off and stick it to your wall! And they’re repositionable, so you can see how it looks and feels in different spots of your house at different times of the day! Peel & stick samples are available in 275 of Sherwin-Williams top selling colors and 50 Emerald® Designer Edition colors! You can get them here and they ship for free!

What do you think?! Are you a fan of the 2023 Sherwin-Williams Color of the Year?!

3 years ago I walked into the Merc and it was finally (and officially!) ours. My heavens did we have our work cut out for us. I thought that it would be a year max before we had Phase 1 completely finished (insert maniacal laughter here).

We renovated for a year before we moved in and then, once we were here I was exhausted and the powerful, statement making spaces that I dreamed of were a little hazy. For 2 years most of the spaces we simply lived in, no design, no statements, just a blank slate waiting for creativity to get going again.

I feel like I keep saying this because I want you to know that if you are in that in between place, YOU ARE JUST FINE!! Be patient with yourself and the inspiration will come!

Finally I have a reveal to share, and I am over the moon in love with how our laundry/mud room worked out!

The Renovation

This is the floor plan for the Merc, the highlighted area is the laundry space!

For fun, let’s remember what this space looked like when we bought it.

Be prepared, it’s unrecognizable!! The door in the bathroom was converted to the main laundry window.

And you can see the light shining through the door in the back right corner. Crazy right!? This area was actually split in 1/2 and the left half was turned into Ivie’s bathroom, while the right half created the laundry/mudroom!

This

Demo and Framing

This was the first space that we demoed. There were 2 bathrooms that we removed and after 9 months of dreaming about ripping out the walls it was THE BEST FEELING!

The framer came and closed off the doorway, and built the new walls (can you see it coming together!?)

Oh and just for fun, this is what the outside looked like until the Andersen window was installed and the stucco was repaired! Learn all about our windows here!

The far right wall was one of the Merc Perks that we had to maneuver around. This whole area was an addition (maybe #4 or #5?) and was built out of concrete block. We had to work with the existing doorways and came up with a sort of zig zag hallway. While we were working on the plans I was super nervous about it feeling like a maze, but it’s great and not weird at all!

We were able to raise the doorway a little (you can see the steel beam at the top of it, the wood header was also moved up!) The light on the left side of the picture is coming through the window.

Can you see the space on the floor where they had to remove the concrete and run new pipes?

Drywall was magical!

Now It’s Time for Design

The cabinets were custom built by my friend Shawn at Aspen Mill. I wanted to do something special that had a nod to the age of the building and came up with the idea of a faux map cabinet/laundry sorter. It is one of my favorite parts of the Merc! You can see what the sorter looked like before the face was installed, there are 3 separate compartments and it pulls out like a giant drawer.

Lighting Tip:

I was SO excited for the lights. If you have it in the budget, a great way to make a statement with lighting is to install pendant lights where you would naturally put can lights. This space is long and narrow and recessed lighting was the obvious choice but instead I went with these modern pendant lights from Triple Seven Home.

And this is kind of where it stayed for the better part of 2 years! (Pssst. dont be mad but I photoshopped out the exposed water shut off valve in the picture below.)

A blank slate that was fine and live-able, but not special. Ya know? Like, it’s good, but it’s not iconic.

Also, it had become COMPLETELY overrun with plants and I needed a better system for keeping the back of the house plants happy! I dont have a great shot of them, but picture this times 42.

Rainbow Tile

Fast forward to 2020. I came across the most incredible tile. I was looking for a great pattern (which Lili has a ton of!) But found these rainbow baguette tiles in the most perfect colors I couldnt even handle it.

Instantly my creativity was sparked and using this tile in the laundry room was all I thought about!

Can I Actually Do This!?

I’m not going to lie, it’s a big statement and I got the pit sweats on a few occasions and almost talked myself out of it. But I had a long come to Jesus about it and remembered why I wanted the Merc in the first place, to be different! And white tile, white cabinets, black windows, and plants were not going to get me the “I cant believe I get to live here” feeling that makes the Merc so special. So rainbow tile it was!

You guys came in clutch helping me sort through all of the options and I settled on a campy earthy modern rainbow pattern that is EXACTLY the vibe I wanted.

As it so happens to go with projects, there were some slight bumps in the road. You’d think after 10 years I’d have it figured out, but nope, failure FOREVER!!!

Because of the unpredictable mix of tile colors in the boxes I not only had no idea what to expect, but there were some colors that I only had a handful of. This lead me to come up with a plan to add a 4th row of tile to half of the wall and an upper cabinet on the other half.

Aannndddd Failure.

Granted I was still going to put a shelf along the top of the tile and inside the cabinet box, but I knew right away that this was NOT the right direction.

That’s one good thing about failing so often is that I know in my gut if it’s a good idea and bad execution or if it’s just a bad idea. This was the later.

So off the cabinet came, and off the 4th row of tile came, and back to the drawing board.

I needed something grittier. The oak cabinet was too middle of the road, in terms of color and design. The shelf needed to be dark, but not polished painted black like the door and window. It also needed to be lightweight visually. The tile is screaming for attention and the shelf needs to not compete at all.

I called my friend Lee from Artisan Metal Design to see if he could weld a simple suspended shelf for me. Basically this table, flipped upside down and attached to the ceiling. He of course delivered and it looks incredible! Want to see?!

The arched magnetic wood memo board is such a perfect way to balance the design of the space and of course, bring in more plants!

How is that for a before and after!?

Thanks for following along with our renovation friend, it means the world to us!!

If you are new to the Merc series, you can relive it from the beginning here!

I am over the moon to share with you this year’s Sherwin-Williams Save Me room makeover! If you’re new to the game, let me bring you up to speed! Every year I partner with the best paint company in all the land and overhaul a lucky winner’s space. Last year we tackled Amy’s Living Room, and this year we are at the Cliffords, turning a bedroom-that started out as an office- back into an office/playroom!

Office with half painted green and white wall, peg shelf and black modern chandelier

Let me tell you a little bit about this awesome family and what we did at their house. A couple of years ago their oldest son was diagnosed with a brain tumor, in response to his need, they had to close off the room just off their entryway and turn it into a bedroom. Closing off this room made the entryway dark and blocked the mountain view that they had. When Mo died in June, one of the most important things to his mom was that this room was opened back up to let the light back into the house. She wanted the room to be a place for her other boys to be able to hang out and play legos and do art projects. I think this is the scenario that a lot of young parents find themselves in, functional play space that invites creativity, but can also be presentable as an adult room. Ya feel me?

The first thing that we did was demo the wall. Man, what a difference it made! Once the space was opened back up, and the new doorway was closed off again it was ready for the overhaul of a lifetime!

Doesn’t the dark green interior make all the difference in the world!? The space is colorful without being too loud and has plenty of natural elements to ground it. It’s the perfect mix of playful and approachable. And honestly, the combo of the green walls, yellow chairs from Article and raw wood is just so good!!

This room has massive ceilings and we took advantage of every square inch of it with our floor to ceiling IKEA bookcase hack. I am obsessed with the ROYGBIV books (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet). To keep it extra playful we added some of the boys favorite lego builds into the mix!

My favorite part of the space though is the paint treatment. Want to know how to replicate it??! Oh good! I used a combo of the GREATEST white in the world, my secret formula Mandi White and Jasper SW 6216.

We started by painting the whole space in Emerald Interior Matte. I LOVE Sherwin-Williams Matte sheen, especially when you want to disguise wall texture as much as possible. (Which we did because the walls have their original heavy texture, texture from when the room was closed off, and now texture from when we opened it back up.) The lower the sheen in a paint finish, the less light it reflects, and the less texture shows. It’s actually kind of magical!

The next step is to set up a laser level to mark the entire room for the accent color. I wanted everything, closet door included, to have this color on it. A laser level is a must for a project like this, floors and ceilings are rarely level and so measuring up from the floor or down from the ceiling might not give you a level line around the room.

Following the laser level mark, I taped off the line with painters’ tape (if you are taping over a freshly painted area I highly recommend using Delicate tape so you don’t pull the new paint off the wall when you remove it!)

Getting a perfectly straight line is very easy, it just requires one small step that will make all the difference in the world. Regardless of the brand or type of tape you are using, if you are painting on a textured surface, you’ve got to follow this simple hack.

Once your tape is up, use a brush to paint the main wall color (in our case Mandi White) along the tape line. This will seal the edge and fill any negative space that the tape couldn’t reach inside the wall texture. Essentially, it’s bleeding the paint, you’re just doing it intentionally, so the bleed is camouflaged with the Mandi White wall color. Cool right?!

After this is dry, it’s time to paint the accent color! A tip when you are painting: make sure the paint is freshly shaken. The longer paint sits, the more it separates.

Remove your painters’ tape while the paint is still tacky if you can. Slowly peel it back holding it at a 45-degree angle and watch your perfect paint line reveal itself. Oh, and when you’re done, wipe the puddle of drool off of the floor so that you don’t slip.

After I had gotten to this point, my gut told me that we needed to do something more exciting on the wall. I’ve been dying to do a giant single circle pattern forever and this was the perfect opportunity.

How to Paint A Giant Circle on a Wall

Start by finding the center of your circle.

For me this was the center of the wall, but you don’t have to do that, you can totally create a circle that is off centered or overlaps onto an adjoining wall!

Draw the circle

This part is super easy, and as my 10-year-old would say, “so satisfying.” Tie a pencil to a string that has zero stretch (the zero stretch is very important for a perfect circle!). Tack it to the wall in the center of where your circle will be. Extend the string and hold the pencil at a 90-degree angle from the wall. Keeping the string tight draw your circle!

Painting the circle

Cutting in (aka painting with a brush) is the best way to paint your circle, or at least to paint along the edges of it. Go nice and slow and follow the pencil line!

I love the simple color shift of the halves of our circle. The green that I used is Secret Garden SW 6181 and Grecian Ivory SW 7541. You could do this with any combo of colors, and it will be impactful regardless of what you choose!

I would love to give a huge virtual hug to Sherwin-Williams for giving me the chance to brighten this family’s home! Ok I’m going to sign off before I start to cry. Tutorial for the desk, shelves, and bookcases are comin’ atcha!

Over the summer Court and I had the opportunity of a lifetime when Real Simple magazine asked us to overhaul the Master Suite in their 2019 Real Simple Home. The house is in Brooklyn and absolutely AMAZING. I was also so honored that they asked us to do it! I mean, we’re far from what you would consider interior design professionals. Funny story actually, they asked for a mood board of the room to make sure that the vibe jived with the other rooms in the house. I DIDNT EVEN KNOW HOW TO DO A MOOD BOARD. This actually happened. Luckily we got something sort of figured out and they left a lot of trust in my hands. But guys if this goes to show anything it’s that passion and your heart can take you to places you’ve never dreamed of.

We really identify ourselves as DIYers. You guys know that we loooove a good project. So as I was figuring out what type of DIY we could pull off for this space I knew that there were some restrictions that we had to work around. Because it was on the other side of the country, and because we had a jam packed summer travel schedule, we needed something that could be installed quickly. We couldnt spend days and days working on it in NYC. There was also the huge logistical situation of not having our tools/space to build the way that we do at home. It also (and most importantly) needed to be FREAKING AWESOME. I have been obsessed with caning since we used it on the bench for our entryway and knew that it needed to happen in this space. Thus the most beautiful cane wall on the planet was born. Tutorial is on it’s way, but until then, check out this quick overview video on Real Simple.

Home Depot was the sponsor for the room, which meant that all furniture and accessories are straight from my favorite orange store. Yes, the chandelier. Yes, the bed. Yes, the accent chair. Yes, the rug. ALL OF IT!! If my years of incessant Home Depot love hasn’t turned your heart yet, maybe this space will! All of the pieces are linked below!

My favorite piece in the room is the bed. Oh my gosh, it has the best art deco design don’t you think? I am digging so hard on the arches and the black and brass two tone finish.

If you’ve been around Vintage Revivals for any length of time you know that I usually dont paint an entire room a color. I love white (specifically my secret formula Mandi White) with my whole heart. But with this space I pushed myself out of my comfort zone a little and painted all of the walls Rosemary. If you are on the hunt for a good mid-tone green this one gets my stamp of approval!

This was such a fun project to work on and challenging in all of the best ways! I hope you guys had fun following along and getting a peek behind the curtain! If you want to relive the whole process, check out the RS House highlight reel on Instagram!

HOLY. We survived!! A complete kitchen renovation (including wall removal and construction!) in 10 days. I’ve never been more elated to share a project with you guys! We partnered with Samsung to launch their latest appliance color Tuscan Stainless Steel and overhauled the kitchen at our family cabin. Are you ready to see how it turned out!? (You can read all where we started here!)

Technically this is where we started when we bought the cabin 5 years ago.

Grody.

But this is where we were starting with this reno. Less grody but not great.

Some of our biggest frustrations were

  • zero storage
  • outdated cabinets
  • remnant countertops
  • 15 yr old appliances
  • cut glass and brass ceiling fans

And this is what it looks like now!!

Could you just die!? It looks incredible!!

The view from the other side is just as magical.

There is just so much to talk about!

Tuscan Stainless Appliances

Let’s start with the epicenter for this whole space. The warm bronze of Samsung’s Tuscan Stainless Steel appliances. What an impactful change from standard stainless right?! I was at the unveiling of the color in February and loved it then, but seeing it again I loved it even more.

It was less brown than I remember and changes based on the light in the space. It could easily be integrated in with stainless appliances (like if you need to replace just a fridge) without looking out of place. I love that it has a mix of matte Tuscan stainless and chrome.

It completely elevates the whole renovation!

Cabinetry

One of my biggest worries using an IKEA kitchen was that it would look too basic, but I think it looks awesome! The custom shelf makes all the difference right?!

We built the shelf out of plywood, and metal straps. I LOVE the industrial vibe that raw edge plywood, gives off.  One trick when you are working with raw edge plywood is to cover the whole edge with wood filler and then sand it off. It will fill in all of the small holes and gaps and make the edge look more finished.

Hands down our biggest frustration with the space was storage. We literally had 1 upper cabinet that served as a pantry for 5 families. It was a nightmare!! I decided to take the non-functional bump out by the stairs, frame it in, and add floor to ceiling cabinets.

While I was a little bummed to lose the natural light, this is going to be the biggest game changer! I mean, just look at all of that storage!!!

We covered both walls with 4×4 white tile (you can get it in stock at Home Depot!) My go to is white grout, so that is what I did on the first wall, but it just didnt feel right so I ended up covering it with this product in Oyster and I am so happy with how it turned out. Changing the grout color in a space can freshen it up more than you can imagine! If your kitchen is feeling meh, you should try it!

Being a cabin and all I wanted to keep with the raw wood vibe we were already embracing by using a natural wood countertop. The original plan was to use a stainless sink, but after we (I) accidentally cut the hole too big I swapped it out for this larger black composite sink. and HOLY COW what a happy accident. The black looks significantly better than the stainless did!

Want to see the ENTIRE renovation happen in less than 5 minutes? Watch the timelapse video below!

If you are a VR lifer, you may remember back in the early days when I did a few room makeover giveaways. It was SO MUCH FUN and also so much work. Since then, I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to present itself again and a few months ago it did!! I teamed up with Sherwin-Williams® as my sponsor to give a room makeover to one lucky reader!

Let The Giveaway Begin!

Sherwin-Williams challenged me to find someone who could use some help with making their dream space happen. You guys saw my call for submissions on Instagram and after pouring over all of the #SWSAVEME submissions I chose the sweetest girl named Amy. Her situation is the same that so many of us find ourselves in. We buy our first house with all of the best intentions bubbling at the surface. When we move in and find that there is more work than we anticipated, it’s more expensive than we thought, and unlike everything you see on a room makeover show, it doesn’t happen in 27 minutes.

Can anyone relate?

When they moved into their 1937 house, things like updating bathrooms and dealing with the quirks of an old house took precedence (as they should). Things like repainting a functional albeit boring living room were wayyyy down on the project list. And I could not wait to get my hands on it!

The vibe that we went for is Modern Desert. My obsession with the Sherwin-Williams 2019 Color of the Year Cavern Clay SW 7701 is verging on unhealthy. They absolutely nailed it. So, after stalking Amy’s Pinterest boards and catching her style, I was over the moon to find that this modern desert dweller vibe I had my heart set on would be perfect.

The entire room got a coat of the best white paint color in the world (you can find the formula here; it’s a custom color I have mixed at Sherwin-Williams) and the ends of the room are rocking  a statement-making accent color. Cavern Clay it’s seriously bold, instead of overwhelming this small living room with it, I decided that a quick color blocking would be perfect and I love how it turned out.

Color Blocking 101

The great thing about this type of accent wall is that it is entirely customizable. I used white and orange, but you can you any combo of colors in the world.

Before painting, clean all surfaces with a bucket of soapy water and sponge to remove dirt and oils.

Step 1: Paint Your Base Color

Don’t worry about painting the entire wall, just make sure that you cover enough of the area so that you have an overlap with the second color; that way you can save yourself frustrating touchups. In my case, I painted most of the wall with that perfect white color I mentioned earlier.

Step 2: Set Your Line

To make sure that my line was exactly the same on both sides of the room, I used our trusty laser level. It takes all of the guesswork out of measuring and can be especially helpful on older homes that might have uneven floors or ceilings. You know that your line is level, even if the floor isn’t.

Step 3: Tape off Your Line

You can get a perfectly straight paint line, even if you have textured walls like Amy. It’s all in the technique, which I’ll talk about next.

Step 4: Paint Your Base Color On The Tape

This might seem a little weird, but if you hear nothing else in this post, hear this. IF YOU WANT A PERFECT PAINT LINE YOU HAVE TO DO THIS. Painter’s tape is not all equal, but even the best painter’s tape can’t perfectly fill every gap and dip in wall texture. This is where painting your base color comes in. If the paint is going to bleed, don’t you want it to bleed the color that makes it invisible? By using the base color (in my case Mandi White) and painting over the edge of the tape, it seals all of those gaps and dips. That way when you go back through with the accent color, all of those problem areas are taken care of!

Step 5: Paint Your Accent Color

One important tip when you are painting a wall and using painter’s tape is to remember to remove your tape while your paint is still wet. Obviously, you don’t want to remove it after each coat, but once your last coat is on, it’s go time! Taking the tape off before it dries means that the paint won’t seal itself to the tape and peel your fresh paint off of the walls.

To break up our color blocking even more, I made quick ledge shelves out of maple (you can see the tutorial here!)

What a difference a new coat of paint makes!!

Let’s talk about the furniture! Almost all of it came from Article. Article is my favorite place for amazing quality, design driven pieces. This is the 3rd time that I’ve been lucky enough to use their pieces in a room (you can see Aspyn’s living room here, and my Mother In Law’s living room here) and every single time I am blown away by them.

The couch I chose is their Belez sofa in Yuma Tan. The color of the leather is so cool, it’s less orange than regular camel leather. I love the spun metal legs too. This sofa is structured and comfy and I love the large cushions on the bottom. It was so funny, when we opened the couch Amy’s husband kept saying “wow, this is like real leather!”

I have been wanting to use the Lento chairs FOREVER. I think that every room needs some black to ground it and these chairs are the perfect way. They are small enough that they work well in multiples, but large enough that you can spend hours hanging out in one. I love the detail of the removable back cushion.

For the media console I chose the Seno in Walnut. It’s a great height for rooms like Amy’s that have lower ceilings. The rich walnut color is so gorgeous!

Can we talk about this mirror for a minute. I have never in my life seen a mirror that I love more than this one. The walnut wood, black leather tabs and brass caps are like every good thing ever rolled into one. The best part, the Beau mirror is only $249!! Do you know how much oversized mirrors are at regular retailers? Like 3x that amount!!

I had so much fun digging around in my storage unit and at my favorite secondhand haunts for all of the accessories.

The Lucca Olive Green pillows are EVERYTHING. They are the most perfect velvet fabric and come as a pair!

TODAY IS A BIG DAY. We’ve partnered with Sherwin-Williams® and finally finished (like totally finished) one of the rooms in the Merc! Guys, meet my teenage daughters bathroom + closet!

When we bought the Merc, this space was on our weird and frustrating Merc perks list. The wall that separates the bedroom from the bathroom was one of those “this is not moving and you’re going to have to work around it” situations.

When I was designing this space for my daughter Ivie, I wanted it to be perfectly teenager. Lots of light surfaces, eclectic design, and rocking my favorite statement wall.

I was originally going to paint the whole room pink but decided against it. The color white that I used is THE BEST WHITE PAINT COLOR IN THE ENTIRE WORLD! It’s a custom mix at Sherwin-Williams called Mandi White, you can get the formula here!

There is this half truth floating around that in rooms like a bathroom that get heavy use and moisture that you need to use a higher sheen finish (like semi-gloss) for cleanability. In my opinion that’s false- if you use the right kind of paint. Sherwin-Williams Emerald Matte finish is my go to for every space in my house. It’s the perfect mix of style and durability!

DIY Paint By Numbers Wall Mural

As I was scouring my brain for something to do on the wall, I came across an image by one of my favorite IG artists Colleen. It hit me like a ton of bricks what if I had her design a paint by numbers wall mural!! She is amazing, you should definitely go and follow her!

DIY Paint By Numbers Wall Mural Bathroom Makeover

Globe Light | Memo Light

After a quick message and a few hours, I had in my hand the perfect piece of semi-permanent art for Ivie’s bathroom.

I took Colleen’s drawing to my local Sherwin-Williams store and color matched 13 (!) colors (I was there for a while, it’s a good thing they have free hot chocolate.)

The colors I ended up with were:

  • Sheraton Sage SW 0014
  • Eminent Bronze SW 6412
  • Sassy Green SW 6416
  • Baby Bok Choy SW 9037
  • Dusted Olive SW 9028
  • Rock Garden SW 6195
  • Clary Sage SW 6178
  • Privilege Green SW 6193
  • Thunderous SW 6201
  • Pewter Green SW 6208
  • Riverway SW 6222
  • Jubilee SW 6248
  • Intimate White SW 6322
  • Gossamer Veil SW 9165
  • Mandi White (formula here)
  • Pink Shadow SW 0070

Paint By Numbers Wall Mural Pattern

Supplies You’ll Need:

Prep

Thoroughly wash your walls down with a good degreaser. This is the last chance you’ll have before you start painting! Place painters tape along the edge of your baseboard to protect it from paint drips and brush marks!

Tracing Your Mural

I started by projecting the design onto the wall and tracing it with a pencil. Because of the nature of the design, I wasn’t too careful about getting it exact, but I did make sure that the sides were level. The projector we used is a portable one that we use for outdoor movie nights, I just connected it to my laptop with the image! So easy!

Tracing a Wall Mural

If you don’t have a projector, don’t worry! This design is very free flowing and could definitely be drawn freehand!

Paint Every Other Section

I labeled each paint section with a number and made sure that each can of paint was also labeled. Don’t skip this part most colors will need 2 coats of paint and if stuff gets mixed up then it will cause extra work and probably a few swear words.

Start by painting every other section. The reason you are doing this is so that you can have time for the paint to dry before you paint an adjoining color. If you don’t wait, your colors can easily smear together.

Go Slow!

As easy as it is to rush through a project like this, take it slow! It will save you a ton of time on touch-ups.

Not too shabby for 2 hours of work!

Are you ready to see the rest of the bathroom makeover?!

This is a verrrry dramatic before and after.

This is what the bathroom looked like when we bought the Merc. Of course it wasnt a bathroom then, and a whole section of wall had to come out, but pinky promise this is the same space!

This is after the reno and before the decorating!

And this is what it looks like now!

Mirror | Vanity Lights | The Healer’s Hand Print

Prints 1 2 3 | Towel Bar

There isn’t a door separating the bathroom from the bedroom, and because of the layout the closet is also visible at all times. Normal closet rods just weren’t going to do so we built a custom birch plywood one.

There is a ton of storage and the shelves and rods are interchangeable!

It’s the perfect bathroom for a 15-year-old! Heck, it’s the perfect bathroom for a 35 year old!

Huge thank you to Sherwin-Williams for partnering with me on this fun room makeover! We’re officially 2 rooms down and 12 to go in the Merc!

Yay? Lol!

Hey friends!

Next week is National Painting Week with Sherwin-Williams®!! It’s one of my favorite weeks of the year (and favorite motivators to get projects done!) National Painting Week is an annual celebration dedicated to the transformative power of paint and color in our homes and communities. I have teamed up with Sherwin-Williams and participated in National Painting Week for the past few years (since 2013!) by making over spaces in my local community (you can see our playhouses from last year here, and my favorite room of all time here!) This year I worked with The Learning Center for Families (TLC). TLC is a local non-profit that blesses the lives of SO MANY families. They offer support and education for families with kids who have special needs, are lower income, ESL (English Second Language), and more. They teach classes for parents, have playgroups for kids, and really try to help families that need it. What an awesome thing right?! I was so excited when they let me loose in one of their playrooms. This is where it started:

And this is what it looks like now:

Because the room is used for little kids I wanted something that was fun and a little over-the-top playful. I had a general idea of the colors I wanted to use so I went into my local Sherwin-Williams store and started picking swatches. Here’s a little insight into my process.

1. Take all the swatches that are remotely in the color that you want

2. Fan them out on a table.

3. Start picking your favorites and create a new fan with those guys.

The winning colors are (from left to right) Marooned SW 6020, Oceanside SW 6496 (the color of the year! You can see how I used it in another room here!!) Innocence SW 6302, Jasper Stone SW 9133, Determined Orange SW 6635, Gambol Gold SW 6690, Wondrous Blue SW 6807, and of course “Mandi White” (Not an official color but you can get the recipe for the perfect white here!)

Colorful Kids Playroom Makeover! Complete with Rainbow Stripes, Vintage Wooden Play Furniture, and Easy Art!

I started by clearing everything out of the room and painting. Painting stripes can be a pretty tedious process, especially if you do it the right way. And with all of the stripes happening here, it was super important to do it the right way.

I started by clearing everything out of the room and painting. Painting stripes can be a long process, especially if you do it the right way. And with all of the stripes happening here, it was super important to do it the right way. It’s completely worth it in the end.

Most walls (especially in the western US as we found!) have wall texture on them. I don’t care if you’re using blue or green painters tape, if you have wall texture you’ll still have bleeding, unless you use my trick.

I started by painting the upper half of the walls in the playroom with Mandi White. Once that paint was dry, I marked off my stripe. Then before I used my new color, I put some white on the edge of the tape. The white bleeds underneath so that when I use my accent color, that space has already been filled, but because it’s the same color as my wall, you don’t notice and it looks like a perfect stripe. Cool right? Notice in the below picture that the vertical stripes are painted, then you can see the tape, and then the paint color again? That is because after I painted the stripes, I taped off the next set (the ones in between) and bled the original stripe color, so that I could paint the other colors on. Make sense?

Colorful Kids Playroom Makeover! Complete with Rainbow Stripes, Vintage Wooden Play Furniture, and Easy Art!

It’s not usually a big deal to do this step, but because I have so many colors and they’re all touching it took a while. So worth it.

One quirky thing about the space that we had to work with was the windows. As you can see in the before pictures, they had a picket fence in front of them to meet state code. Well, instead of using the fence, we built a quick book ledge that met the height requirement and turned it into something functional and much better looking.

Guys, I am SO excited to show you the first completed room at the Merc!!

Sidenote: You may be wondering why we have a fully decorated space when we still don’t have plumbing but this is the sometimes reality of running  a business like Vintage Revivals, I thought that the reno would be wayyyy further along when I signed on to do this makeover (remember our hopeful Thanksgiving move in date?) but it wasn’t and now here we are! I will say that having a room finished is the greatest morale booster ever, it makes it feel like we’re getting really close!

When I say that I’ve been dreaming of doing a It’s A Small World themed room makeover for 4 years that is accurate. I LOVE Mary Blair and the exterior of Small World at Disneyland so so much. So when Home Depot asked me to do a room makeover using some of their wallpapers I was excited, when I found the white and gold splatter wallpaper I was I-Won-the-Lottery-Cause-the-Small-World-Room-is-Happening thrilled.

This is what the room looked like when we bought the Merc.

Right there in the center of that space. (You’re going to have to squint and use your imagination )

It went through a few changes (you know, like walls, and adding a window)

Sheetrock and paint

And now, if you can believe it, it looks like this:

If you follow my stories on Instagram you got a full on behind the scenes view of the creative process.

We laid the floor (don’t worry, there is a full tutorial + info coming on that) in 2 days, got the doors put in,  light installed (yes that light is from Home Depot and, no, its not $$$$) and got to work!

Then we started on the wall. You should know that I’m not a planner, I had a very rough sketch of what I sort of wanted the building layout to look like.

Did I mention that it was rough?

We started building with 1/2″ ply and 1×2’s and adding details along the way based on what the design was missing. Keeping it all very Small World true to life.

This is when the buildout was almost finished and I was ready to start painting. I was so conflicted because I LOVED the plain wood but with the wood floor and the wood dresser it was just too much wood.

Also, do you ever try to be something that you’re not? Like I try to be one of those cool laidback California-ish designers that only use white, black, and wood and it’s all going swimmingly until I start to hate it and just feels flat. So then I go back to my true colorful roots and everything is right with the world again. This is a lesson that I seemingly have to learn over and over again, so if you find yourself physically unable to emulate the designs you love so much its ok, I go through that too.

The plan was to keep a lot of the wood exposed, mix in some awesome wallpaper and a few colors and call it a day. Well I hated it. After some serious trial and error, frustration, prayer, and a lunch break I finally got the inspiration that I needed. I’ve got a whole post coming tomorrow showing you every stop along the way and a time-lapse video. Until then, lets talk about the decor!

This Spatter Gold Self-Adhesive Removable Wallpaper
was the jumping off point for the whole space. It is heavy duty, reposition-able, and has a great pattern. I love the fact that it’s removable (for the ever changing designer that I am) and one thing that I’m very much looking forward to is wallpapering the entire closet once the shelving is in! Speaking of wallpaper, head over to The Apron Blog to see some of my favorite wallpaper pairings!!

The giant schoolhouse light is just magical. It is HUGE guys, and is the perfect light to still capture the 1930’s vibe we’re going for in the Merc while being statement making enough that it can hold it’s own with the design of the room. And I love that it has such a unique shape, it just feels special. Check it out here!

My daughter’s single request (besides having dog treats in her room) was for a big bed. Knowing that the wall was going to be pretty intense, I needed to find a bed that complimented the accent wall instead of covering it up or taking away from it. This black iron bed was perfect! The color ties in with the doors, the vibe is 100% Merc, and it lets the wall be the star that it is. The best part is that a full size bed, including the frame is only $269!

I have a confession, a secret that is hurting me to my very core. Are you ready? I don’t hate beige right now. I KNOW!!! WHO AM I?! Though I will say I don’t love it as a whole house paint color, using it as an accent isn’t the worst thing that has ever happened to me. For example, the rug!

It’s subtle (which this room needed) and the cable weave on it is just so good!! The color is going to be great for hiding dirt, and for now it’s great at hiding dust…that keeps floating in from the transom that has yet to have glass put in it.

Ok lets talk about this dresser. Did you think it was from a place that rhymes with Crest Flelm? You did huh? Its ok, the vast majority of the internet is going to be shocked that its from HOME DEPOT. Seriously, and it comes in a dark walnut as well.

If you have not heard a single thing I’ve said this year hear this: HOME DEPOT HAS EVERYTHING. Rugs? Furniture? Lighting? Did I mention that our doors, hardware, and windows also are from Home Depot?

Thanks for following along with this crazy fun journey, you guys are the best!!

Last week I showed you my in-law’s new kitchen, are you finally ready to see the rest of the space?!! EEEEEEEEEEEE!

First off I need to tell you that almost every piece is available from Article. I had THE BEST experience with them when I did the makeover at Aspyn’s house. Her couch so far exceeded my expectations that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on more articles. Having such high expectations,, you would think that they’d maybe have a hard time delivering a perfect 10 again but YOU GUYS. I can’t even put into words how completely blown away I was once again.

Figuring out the layout of a room can be a little tricky, especially when it’s a new space that you haven’t lived in yet. We ultimately decided that 2 sofas that face each other was the best scenario and I have to say that I’m digging the symmetry of the couches and the bookshelves.

So the couches seem like a pretty great place to start. Guys, the couches. We got the Triplo sofa in Taos Brown and I just can’t express how much I love them. They are the perfect shade of warm leather. I have been leaning so heavily toward camel colored leather (not going to lie, I love a good Sven) but these have me convinced to not lean too far. In this space with the light walls and washed out wood floors, they add just the right amount of warm depth.

When I posted about them on my insta stories I got a lot of comments asking how comfortable they are. A lot of people were worried that there was just one skinny cushion on the bottom. While they may look like that, the whole second fusion is also padding, so there is plenty of cush for the tush. And how about those metal legs?! They’re black but have sort of a mirror finish. They are freaking money.

The Nimbus coffee table is natural teak and has such pretty variation. It obviously works here with all the other Southwest elements in the design, but this table was actually meant to be used outdoors. Such awesome versatility for one table. These outdoor chairs would go great with it on a patio.

How are you feeling about the wall hanging? I scored it at a secondhand store that was closing for $150 about a year ago and I’ve been itching to use it ever since. I think its so good in here, which kind of makes me a little sad cause I really wanted to put it in the Merc. But it just belongs here, ya know?

How much are you dying over the lamp? Its the Stilt Floor Lamp  The large drum shade comes flat packed and is really easy to assemble.

Next to one of the couches we put the Ameoba side table. It’s such a great size for an end table, a night stand, a plant stand, a little table by your front door for mail. I mean, it can morph into what ever you need it to be…like Units, but wayyyy more stylish.

The Myria copper pot adds just the right amount of metal, and I love that is so shiny! Also, its only $99. So there’s that. You can also get a hanging planter version of it for $59!! And you guys know how much I love hanging succulents from the ceiling.

Tucked underneath the stairs is just doubt the most stylish reading corner that you’ve ever seen. Even when we were going over the plans for the house, we knew that we wanted to put a little chair and light underneath and I fell head over heels for the Embrace Moss chair. I mean, first of all it’s velvet, so there’s that. I am digging the matte metal legs with the more traditional shape of the chair.

The tall brass Barbell floor lamp is the icing on the cake. Its not obtrusive, it’s just there hanging out in the corner people watching and obviously feeling really happy about it.

The entryway is currently rocking a Beatles piece of art and THE MOST AMAZING FRONT DOOR EVER.

To say I’m happy about how this house has come together is like saying Mrs. Trunchbull doesn’t want anyone to eat her cake. I’m so unbelievably in love with it!!

HUGE thank you to Article for partnering up with me on this makeover. It was such a fun surprise for my in-laws especially after they endured our craziness and let us live with them for the last 9 months, goodness knows that’s not easy. You can see all of the pieces again below, and make sure you click over and sign up for their email updates, you don’t want to miss their killer sales, or new product drops!!
