Hey guys!! Are you sitting down? Good. Cause I’m about to blow your freaking mind. When you think of The Home Depot, what comes to mind? Tools? Wood? Plants? Orange smiling faces? Add another thing to that list, HOME DECOR! They just rolled out their new decor line, and you’re not going to believe how terribly good it is.

If your house is feeling a little lost, one of my best tips to make it feel like a home and add some critical personality is to mix vintage and new. Vintage pieces add the soul and new pieces make the space feel updated.

As most of you know, we moved out of our house in January and into the inlaws basement. When Home Depot reached out about styling a space with some of my favorite pieces I couldn’t shout yes loud enough. I love paying it forward and no one helps me more with the kiddos than my adorable sister in law Lindsay. (You might remember her daughter Macie’s bedroom that we made over a few years ago.) Her entryway is the lucky space. She recently repainted and installed new flooring and I was so excited to give her a little design nudge.

Every time I go to my storage unit, my heart breaks a little for the pieces that are just sitting in there. I know, its a little dramatic, but when that rolling door opens and I see all of my favorite things just sitting there collecting dust I want to lovingly console each of them. After looking at Lindsay’s entryway I knew that it was the perfect spot for my card catalog (you can see how it started out here, but consider yourself warned, if furniture abuse is a trigger you might not want to click that link)

Once I knew what the star was going to be, I went to homedepot.com and got to work. Guys. There are SO MANY GOOD THINGS. Always being a woman on a budget, I picked out some of my favorites that won’t blow your budget (the chair! the rug!!)

The first thing that jumped into my cart were these metal Windsor style chair (how great is it that its metal?! Classic style, easy modern finish and only $157 for a pair!) They are oversized and have a wide back that fans out at the top. They would be perfect in a dining room or office too!

Can we just have a moment of silence for the area rug? Its 5×8 and only $126! WHAT!???!?

Seeing as how leather is my love language, there was no way I could resist this
leather mirror
. I am obsessed with the little yellow accent stitches, sometimes it really is the small things guys.

It was really important for the space to be as functional as possible and one of the must haves is a large basket for shoes. The basket that I used is natural, but is also extremely heavy duty (you know how sometimes wicker or rattan falls apart after a short time of heavy shoes being flung inside?) I was pleasantly surprised at how durable this basket is.

You guys know I love a good shelf build, but sometimes its really wonderful to just buy one. The white 24″ shelf that I used is in stock at your local Home Depot all the time!

I added a faux olive tree, simple black framed art, and an old camera to liven up the gigantor wall.

Now tell me how you’re feeling, can you believe all of those treasures came from our favorite orange store!?

Check out homedepot.com for all the mind blowing pieces, and The Apron blog for loads of DIY ideas!

Huge thanks to Home Depot for partnering with me on this post!

Happy Earth Month!! To celebrate all things recycling and up-cycling I’ve teamed up with Aveeno to share an absolutely adorable way to reuse an empty bottle and turn it into a hanging bird feeder! The goal with up-cycling is to not make it look like you up-cycled right? I think we totally achieved our goal with this bird feeder!

I started by rinsing out my Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion bottle with warm water. If you’re just into the recycling part, remove and discard the pump (pumps aren’t recyclable) and recycle the bottle, and this is where you stop. High fives for recycling, but come on?? Where’s the fun in that?! Take off the sticker and take apart the pump, we want that cute green cap.

Gather your supplies. You’ll need:

  • A thrifted wooden bowl
  • Wooden Beads
  • 1/8″ cotton cording
  • Leather lace
  • A drill

Step 1 is to drill 3 holes in your Aveeno bottle. One on the bottom and 2 on either side of the neck.

The next step is to drill a hole in the bowl large enough for the neck of the bottle to fit inside.

Tada!!

Measure 6 feet of cotton cording and find the center point. Feed it through your beads and then through the hole that you drilled on the bottom of the bottle keeping the loop at the top.

Pull the cord through the neck of the bottle.

Thread on the green cap.

Add a bead, tie a knot, and add an additional piece of cord. This will give you more tassels at the bottom of your feeder! Add beads, leather, and anything else your creative mind wants to the ends!

Glue the leather cording around the green cap (you could also paint this if you prefer!)

Fill the bottle with birdseed.

Move everything together nice and tight and tie a knot at the top of the beads that are above the bottle.

Hang it up and enjoy! The seed will fall out of the holes, the birds will be happy, and you are helping the environment!!

I bet you’ve never been so excited to finish a bottle of lotion right!? You can snag Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion at walgreens.com/aveeno!

Huge thanks to Aveeno for pushing my creativity and teaming up with me on this fun project!!

If you are a thrifter or a hand-me-down furniture lover take heed, your life is about to change. Meet your new boyfriend Danish Oil.

You know when you buy an older piece of furniture and it just looks tired? The finish is dull, there are nicks and chips and marks all over it, and though technically it is the same piece as the one on 1st Dibs for $5000, it looks like its had a rough go at life and maybe got the short end of the gene pool in the Herman Miller family.

This is where Danish Oil comes in. When you have a piece that is struggling in the finish department sometimes it seems like the only option is to strip/sand/restain it. But ITS NOT!!

Doesn’t this guy in Aspyn’s Living Room look brand spankin’ new?

He sure didn’t start out like that. I mean we’re talking a “She’s All That” style facelift (I’ll love you forever FPJ!)

So what is this voodoo magic?!

Danish Oil can best be described as 1 part conditioner and 1 part stain. It comes in different colors that you best match your piece’s finish to (don’t worry if your between shades, it miraculously morphs into what it needs to look like!)

Using a clean cloth you rub in on all over the piece, concentrating on the areas that have issues.

It instantly changes everything. Its like real life Photoshop or using Maskcara IIID Foundation.

Check out this piece- see how all of the scratches stand out like a sore thumb?

With a quick wipedown of Danish Oil they just disappear. The wood looks alive, there is more color depth and its now protected against water, kids, and general grossness.

Look at the bottom of the legs:

GOOSEBUMPS!!!

So, if your furniture is looking a little lackluster, you’ve got help on the way!!

Danish Oil comes in a bunch of different colors, most are linked below!(My favorites are the Natural and Medium Walnut (which is sort of the most perfect color for almost any midcentury piece you can throw at it!)

Have you used Danish Oil? Do you love it enough to get a D.O. tattoo with me?

Hey guys!!

Man, thanks for all of the love on Aspyn’s room makeovers, it was such a fun project and I’m so glad that you guys love it!! Lets get started with the tutorials shall we? Up first is the rope wrapped swag light. I have been DYING to do this project for months and just hadn’t gotten around to it. Aspyn’s living room was the perfect place because she only had one overhead light and we didn’t have loads of room for end tables + table lamps.

To make this light you’ll need two wire lampshades from the thrift store that are the same size. The uglier the better (cause I’m on a mission to rid the world of offensive shades and together WE CAN DO IT!!!) The one thing that you need to make sure of is that it has a wire skeleton inside. There are a lot of shades that are made with rigid plastic, those won’t work.

When you remove the fabric/plastic coverings this is what you should have:

The next step is to use a strong adhesive to glue the shades together. I used e6000, but anything that can work on metal will be perfecto!

I used small clamps to hold the shades while the glue set (totally optional)

And then wrapped it with floral wire. Don’t stress if you don’t have clamps, just wrap it with the wire from the get go and it will be great!

The next step is to start wrapping your rope. I used white Masonry line from Home Depot. It has a little bit of a sheen and looks so good! I used 5 spools of it (which I was SHOCKED about). When I was wrapping it I put it over the outside of the wire wrapped section every time I passed over it.

Turn on your favorite show and go to town! Total wrapping time was about 2.5 hours.

Once it was wrapped, I used a hot glue gun to secure the places that I had to start the rope so that it wouldn’t shift or slide.

Up next is to install the light kit. Just follow the instructions on the packaging and attach it to the center of your lamp shade!

To add a little bit of flair I made a tassel and added wooden beads. I would have loved to wire it to be a pulldown chain but I don’t love the idea of constantly pulling on a light that is hanging from the ceiling, so I just tied it to the top of the shade and its adorable and totally not functional. 😉

So cute right?! If you make this project make sure you tag me on Insta, I would LOVE to see it!!

Here’s everything you need to DIY your own:

All month I’ve been overhauling my daughter Ivie’s bedroom. I was assigned one of six trends by HGTV Powerhouse Taniya Nayak and my friends at Frogtape and given $1000 budget to make some magic.

Lets get on with the reveal yes?

This was the jumping off point.

Hellooo!! Last weekend my MIL and I ventured out to see what treasures the secondhand stores of St. George had to offer. We didn’t find a ton (womp womp) but I did find the most wonderful picture for the little guy’s nursery!!

The room is coming along (the reveal will be on the blog in mid-Nov.) but its just been missing something. Something a little weird. Something that makes it not look so perfect. Something that makes you feel like there is a little bit of personality.

Something like a boy scout giraffe perhaps?

Art for Baby Boy Nursery-2

You know its bound to be good when the first reaction is “well, I don’t haaate it.”

You’ve experienced that right?

Your initial reaction is one of great hesitation, then after a second look to soak in the strangeness (why a boy scout giraffe?) it blossoms into something completely fantastic? Those kind of pieces are my absolute favorite. They’re the kind that always gets overlooked because they take your breath away and make you wonder why in the world this exists and then worm their way into your heart and make you feel like you cant go on living unless it’s in your life.

Art for Baby Boy Nursery

I’ve been having a hard time with the color scheme (do we go Classic Blue? Cubbies Blue and Red? Green and White? Southwesty Muted? Orange? Neutral?) this guy has lifted the foggy haze and now I know exactly what I want to do. We are going to go a desert-y i.e. terra cotta, rusty red, olive green, with a little bit of navy, and just a few really saturated jabs of color.

So our $25 boy scout giraffe saved the day! The guy at the consignment store said that they also had an elephant but we were a little too late. We have a lone trooper and we absolutely love him.

Holy cow, it’s been a bit since I’ve found anything super amazing at the thrift store. (I am 100% convinced its because I haven’t been going as much. The amount of great scores is directly related to the time you invest into finding them.) But still, who likes to leave empty handed every freakin time?! No one.

Well, maybe my husband, but he doesn’t count.

Last week I made a super last minute trip inside as they were closing (like at 8:56 and they close at 9) and found some pretty great stuff! Finally!!

All of these little candlestick holders and vessels were $.50 each!

The frame on this is not awesome, but any photograph of Southern Utah is a must have. ($5.00)

This wicker basket ($4.00) will be the perfect plant holder (I’m picturing a bright colored pot inside it!)

Thrift Store Finds-3

The last treasure is this solid wood mid century desk for $30. I LOVE the drawer fronts and handles. Its just so good. You could leave it as it, or paint parts of the drawers, I mean the possibilities are endless!

*Bursts through door stumbling and breathing heavily.

I’m here! Sorry for the radio silence for the last little bit. Things hit fever pitch while I was wrapping a bunch of stuff and every time I sat down to write I just couldn’t find the words. You know other than “Hey guys!” (I can always find those words.)

So what’s up? I missed you man!

One of the big projects that I’ve been working on the last month is a season for The Design Network. Do you know how hard it is to get ready (as in dressed, showered, hair and makeup that frequently?! Oh my gosh. It was torturous.)  You can pop over and check out the promo reel for the show, it turned out so cute, I cant wait for you guys to see the projects!

I found this super basic campaign dresser at the thrift store for $35. I am painting it (and giving you guys a full tutorial on how to paint laminate!) for Sherwin-Williams National Painting week that is coming up.

How To Paint a Laminate Dresser

All last week I was in Salt Lake for SNAP! It’s a conference for creative bloggers and so so much fun. My girl Brooke and I took 60 fabulous ladies on a thrifting tour through Salt Lake. We only had 2 hours so we cut right to the chase and hit up George’s Architectural Salvage and Euro Treasures Antiques. If you promise not to laugh you can click on this SUPER old post/video that I did about Euro Treasures in 2011.

Oh my gosh I can’t believe I just voluntarily resurfaced that post.

I walked away from George’s with this retro spun aluminum sconce, it might need a little cleaning…

At Euro Treasures (if you’ve never been you are SO missing out, you’ve got to go and experience the magic) I scored 2 vintage Kilim and a small Native American rug. I think that the darker red is going to go in my entryway and I am planning on turning the small one into a pillow.

Basically I scored big time.

All in all, I’m glad to be back to normal life for a bit! Missed you guys!

Yesterday I shared Part 1 of the couch saga all about the green chesterfields. If you haven’t read it you will absolutely want to get caught up before continuing!

Today you get to hear the rest of the story!

Before I found out that the green couches were still available, I found a SUUUPER good couch on KSL (for those that aren’t in Utah, it is a classified site that is more popular than Craigslist.) The style is totally the retro fabulousness that I was talking about in this post.

626928-1423166492-960162

And it totally reminded me of an old chair that I had.

It was listed at $150 so I called the guy and told him that I would be in Salt Lake in a week and asked him if he would be willing to hold it (because remember you always ask!) He said yes, I love it when that happens!!

We picked the couch up yesterday and I and having mixed feelings about it.

Vintage Black Sofa-2

I was SURE that this was the couch that would go in my living room, but I don’t know if I am 100% sold on the fabric.

Vintage Black Sofa-3

Its pretty texture-y and shiny and the foam underneath needs to be replaced, but I am beyond obsessed with the shape and overall vibe.

So which one is your fave? The green Chesterfield, or this black beauty?

You guys. Have I got a story for you!

I’ve been on the hunt for a vintage leather couch for what seems like my whole dang life. The search was kicked into overdrive when the orange couch was moved into the storage unit. 2 weeks ago an ad popped up in the nearby area section of Craigslist (you guys have seen that right? When you have a specific search typed in it will pull things from the Craigslist in surrounding areas)

Screen Shot 2015-02-10 at 8.23.21 AM

This was the listing:

It was one of those running around the living room screaming moments because I have not found another colored vintage leather chesterfield since this horrible tragedy in ‘12.

The problem was that it was located in Bullhead City AZ (about 4 hours south from where I live). I contacted the seller and told him that we would be in Vegas in 2 weeks and asked him if he would be willing to hold them for me. (It never hurts to ask!)  He said that he couldn’t, and the reality was that I couldn’t make it down there to get them, so I had to have a broken heart about it.

THEN last Friday I sent him a text (because the time had come for our Vegas trip) and asked if they were still available.

THEY WERE!!

What??!? WHY?!? EEEEEEE! (That was what I was thinking). I asked him if he would be willing to go down on the price (because you always do that) and he said to make an offer. So I was like “How about $250?” and he said yes! HOLY MOTHER OF ALL THINGS THAT ARE HAPPY AND JOYFUL AND FULL OF JOYFULLNESS!!!

So Court and I ventured out in the wee morning hours to take the trip for the couches.

You guys. They are so good.

The only issue that they have is that the big couch has 2 buttons that are coming out. You can bet that I will be figuring out a way to fix it (even if that means taking it to an upholsterer). And lets be honest, for $250 I wouldn’t have cared if there was a possum family living inside.

But, the story doesn’t end there…also, don’t hate me ok?
